GALLIANO FOR DIOR – FLORAL, FUN AND THEATRICAL

One of the highlights from Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week has to be the John Galliano for Christian Dior collection.  Inspired by flowers, Galliano produced a vivid, technicolour fashion garden. From the photos it’s clear to see how theatrical both the show and the pieces were, with tulip-shaped skirts, petal collars and the odd hydrangea or two.  Renowned London milliner Stephen Jones created a collection of headpieces made to look like bunches of flowers complete with cellophane wrapping!  To complete the theme and evoke the feeling of a greenhouse, a see-though tent housed the event at the Rodin Museum. I think collections like these are exciting for two reasons - they show how fashion can draw inspiration from the simplest of ideas and also that the fashion industry can be fun, bright, cheerful and whimsical.  The collection was inspired by the cliff top garden of Les Rhumbs in Normandy, which was the childhood home of Christian Dior who founded the label in 1946.

QASIMI AT MENS PARIS FASHION WEEK

Back stage at the Qasimi show, Mens Paris Fashion Week, 27th June 2010

I was lucky enough to be invited to see the Qasimi show at Mens Paris Fashion Week last Sunday for the launch of their Spring / Summer 2011 menswear collection.  Sadly I couldn’t go as I was topping up the tan, kayaking and eating far too much in sunny Jersey.  I went to the Womens show at London Fashion Week last year and can honestly say it was really special.

Qasimi is a luxury fashion and lifestyle label set up by Khalid AlQasimi, with its debut collection launched back in 2008.  Qasimi designs pieces that are a mix of the classic and the unusual.  This is not another predictable fashion label - its fresh outlook takes inspiration from both Arabic flowing fabrics and more suave English tailoring.  Even with its elegant edge, the cuts and fits are very contemporary – very linear and very sophisticated.  The new menswear collection (see below) is everything I love about Qasimi.  I wish them lots of success – they have definitely made a place for themselves on the international stage (Vogue is a big fan) and it’s always great to see new, youthful brands like this coming to the fore.
